(Main Characters)
Che & Jingchi — “She is his spring.”
In some ancient yesterday, my ending had already been written. This place will be my far shore.
If I place my longing on an astronomical scale, letting an immeasurable vastness fill the space within me, then perhaps the thought of you will no longer feel so confined. A piano piece drifts from the player. The wind over the river grows softer. Leaves turn slowly on the surface of the water, echoing those conversations we once had. Autumn in a stellar year has a strange transparency. Emotions seem first magnified, then drawn tight again. And we— we are simply surrounded by the past of the universe.
All these years after leaving the Northern Base, I still find myself quietly intoxicated by it. Perhaps one should begin by looking outward, beyond the orbital cycles of the craft, and only then realize that what it’s something I’ve been away from for a long time.
“But Jingchi… what if one day I drift too far away?”
“Then
I’ll come find you.”
(Impressions in the Folds of the World)
"I remember you."
"I recognize every coordinate—the undertones, the canals, the dusk, the vast and gentle corridors of wind."
"You, fine-tuning the telescope in the nights of Svalbard; you, identifying planetary coordinates on road trips; you, the narrator, quiet to the point of transparency; you, beneath the dome."
"Whenever you leave, I look after the unfinished courtyard for you."
"Now you are back."
"The temperature of the frontier is just as I remember. The snow falls slowly; the starlight has traveled for hundreds of millions of years by the time it reaches us."
"You look back at the frost upon the lens."
"Is it to return to that night, or to go in search of the untold deviation?"
"From where shall we continue? From where shall we begin?"
"I remember you."
(The Quietness of a Flame)
"Quietness arrives with you— and somewhere, something blooms in silence."

(The Realm of Long Wind)
"A vast and gentle emptiness."
"Upon the strings aimlessly plucked falls the heavy snow, like a letter that can never be reached. On the train, amidst the crowd, the mist drifts in a blur. Between the brows, something crystal clear, like a heart. They say if beauty at night is a mystery, it is as much a departure from daytime values as it is a unification with them."

(Heart of the Sea)
"A glimmering habitat suspended above a blue, newly born star, open to both the deep sea and the stars."
(Planet Gate & Event Horizon)
"Event Horizon" - A boundary in spacetime. No events within the horizon can affect an outside observer. The region surrounding a black hole is an event horizon.

(Protoplanet Embryo Initiative)
"On the edge of the dust where stars are born, watching over the unfinished land, waiting for the world to slowly take shape."
(Hexi Corridor)
"Historical relics are spatial nodes compressed by time. People attempt to use geometry and semantics to establish coordinates for civilization that can be read from the past. How can space bear the weight of civilization?
Whether in the Hexi Corridor or at the edge of the Milky Way, it's the same question."
Note: The inspiration comes from a research proposal I wrote for a PhD application. More information can be found here.
(Until We Return to the Stars)
"Breath in motion finds what once was. We touched down on a solitary planet. We returned, to the world in its unknowing."
(Notes: Wandering Constellations)
"Perhaps this is a form of sentience, directed toward an inexplicable and endless mystery that I cannot name."
"When did it begin? If I were entirely exposed to the flamboyant beauty of the sky, I would feel a sense of panic, longing for those gentle and mellow nights."
"Perhaps the years that follow are also meant for a fuller understanding of the past."
"Understanding the self is a complex proposition; it demands constant feeling, retracing, and reflection. In the end, what you find is no longer the original you, but someone else entirely."
(Notes: The Crimson Pearl Grass)
"Where to go, and what to do? Sometimes I have a direction, sometimes I feel adrift. Beyond one set of tracks is another; after one suspension bridge, another; after one highway, yet another stretch of road."
"There is no answer, there will be no answer—and perhaps, shouldn't there be none at all?"
